ScaleAuto Paints

Recommended Posts

Thought i would kick off a thread for a showcasing of all things ScaleAuto.

I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone is or has painted out there when it comes to these hard bodied hot rods !!!

Ill kick it off with my first attempt at a ScaleAuto ..... Images below are in no way intended to be a 'how-to' but just a few snapshots & explanations of how i set about painting it.

I have always used Grey ScotchBrite ( automotive grade & ultra fine ) for scuffing a body for paint preparation. This provides some traction for the paint to adhere to instead of sitting on top of a smooth moulded surface.

After this has been done, i like to use an adhesion promoter before hitting the body with colour IMG-1506.JPG.6a8ea7c435eb459607142f80d3cbd1de.JPG

Now, to try and achieve the special "Grello" Manthey Racing have started using on their race cars for this season , i applied a Pearl White basecoat to help give the overall effect that 'shimmer' For this one with some loose guidance from our inhouse model extraordinaire Gordon, i asked him if he has used SMS lacquers before, to which he said NO !! :D

So with time running out & not trusting international shipping for other brands, i pulled the trigger and decided to give it a shot ....

Now, on to the tricky part of mixing the custom "Grello" color, i purchased a Fluro Yellow & Green with the intention of dropping some of the Green into the Yellow to achieve a custom color that resembled the race car.

From there it was a matter of smacking a few decals in place and shooting it with a 2K high gloss clearcoat.

I think the end result does replicate that of the car that raced here at the B12 Hour this year ......

Very well done Beno. No sadly i haven't used SMS paints. To date i have used.

Garvity colours (excellent paints hard to get)

Splash paints. (Great paint colours are a bit limited)

Kcolours. This brand i have ordered and am still to use.

You note on clear coat. I would back you up on that. Use a 2k clear for two reasons. One over time the oils from your hands wont attack the clear coat. Second reason is its super strong and will take a few hits.

My suggestion is DONT use things like Tamiya ts13 gloss clear! This is what is know as a hot paint. It has been know to melt paint and decals. In my plastic modeling i now dont use Tamiya clears for this reason

Example of three painted bodies.

Grey body is painted with real automotive paint. (Ducatti 1199 grey) with 2k clear.

Gas Monkey car is a pure white with 2k clear

Camel car is true camel yellow over a white primer and 2k clear
